How to use it

Which letter shape to choose
All five options are hollow: a white letter with a heavy black outline, so there is something to colour inside. What changes is the shape of that space.

A trade-off worth naming: fatter letters are easier and more satisfying to colour, but thinner letters preserve the real letterform, which is what a child needs to recognise their name in print. For pure colouring, choose Chunky. If the page is also meant to teach the name, Rounded or Handwritten is the better shape.
Long names, short names, and where they break
Letter size is set by the page, not by you: a Letter or A4 sheet has about 7.5 inches of usable width once margins are allowed for, so a four-letter name gets roughly 1.8 inches per letter and a twelve-letter name about 0.6. Somewhere around eight or nine characters the letters stop being comfortably colourable for a small child. For Anastasia, Christopher or a first-and-last name, either accept smaller letters, choose Typewriter, which is the narrowest of the five, or make two sheets and tape them together — a two-page name banner is a better use of a long name than a cramped single page.
Decorations that stay out of the way
The stars, hearts and flowers are placed by trying random spots and rejecting any that touch the frame, land on the name, or overlap something already placed. That is why the count you ask for is sometimes not the count you get: on a long name there is genuinely less clear space, and the tool tells you rather than crowding the letters. Press “Move them around” for a different arrangement of the same number — the name stays put, only the decorations move.
What teachers do with these
- First-day desk tags. One per child, coloured in during the first hour, laminated by lunchtime.
- Cubby, tray and coat-peg labels. The child’s own colouring makes their space theirs.
- Name recognition centre. Print several names, let a child find and colour their own.
- Birthday crowns and door displays. Cut the letters out and mount them on card.
- Meet-the-teacher night. A coloured name page on each desk is the cheapest welcome there is.

Printing, cutting and making it last
Copy paper is fine for crayons and coloured pencils. If markers are involved use 32 lb / 120 gsm and print single-sided, or the colour shows through. For anything that will be cut out and mounted, print on card at 160 gsm so the letters keep their shape. How many letters can I use?
Up to 12. The letters scale down automatically as you add more, so a long name still fits the page — but shorter names give bigger, easier shapes for young children.
Is it really free, with no sign-up?

Can I use these in my classroom?

What paper should I print on?
Ordinary copy paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If markers are involved, use 24–28 lb paper and print single-sided so colour does not show through.
Why bubble letters rather than a traced font?

Can I add a surname or two names?
Type them with a space — it counts toward the 12 characters. For anything longer, make two sheets and tape them together as a banner; that reads better than a cramped single page.
What is the best letter shape for a name coloring page?
Chunky if the point is colouring — it has the biggest interiors and suits a fat crayon. Rounded or Handwritten if the point is name recognition, because they keep the real letter shapes a child needs to recognise on their own work.
Why do I get fewer decorations than I asked for?
Because each one has to clear the frame, the name and every decoration already placed. On a long name there is less free space, so some are dropped rather than dumped on top of the letters. Shorten the name or ask for fewer.
Can I sell name coloring pages I make here?
No. Print freely for your family, class or party, but reselling the generated sheets or publishing them in a book for sale is not permitted.
What resolution is the download?
The PNG is rendered at three times screen size, which is a full-page print at roughly 300 dpi. The SVG download has no fixed resolution at all — it scales to any size without going soft, so use that one if a print shop is involved.
