How to use it

  1. Upload a picture with a bold shape: a dark subject on a light background, an animal silhouette, a simple logo.
  2. Slide "shape detection" until the tool locks on to the outline you want — it controls how dark a pixel must be to count as part of the shape.
  3. Choose the number of dots. Around 20–30 suits a young child; 60–90 makes a detailed puzzle for older kids.
  4. Tick “Show the finished picture” to check the shape is recognisable before you print — that copy also works as an answer key.
  5. Print, or download a PNG. Once joined, the outline is a coloring page too.

How many dots, by age

Dot count is the whole difficulty setting. Too few and the picture is unrecognisable until the very last line, which is frustrating rather than suspenseful; too many and it stops being a counting exercise and becomes tracing.

A good target for the middle of the range: enough dots that an adult can guess the subject at about two-thirds finished. If you cannot, add more.

Which pictures make good dot-to-dots

This traces the outer boundary of the largest dark shape, so the question is not “is it a nice photo” but “does it have one clear silhouette”.

  • Works well: a fish, a car, a house, a dinosaur, a leaf, a plain logo, a tree in winter — anything whose shape you could recognise as a black cut-out.
  • Works badly: a face (the eyes and mouth are separate shapes, and only the head outline gets traced), a tree in full leaf, anything photographed against a background of similar tone.
  • Does not work: subjects made of several disconnected parts. The tool follows one boundary, so the other parts are simply not there.

The quickest fix for a stubborn photo is not the slider — it is cropping tightly to the subject before uploading, so the shape you want is the biggest dark thing in the frame.

Why the numbers do not sit on top of each other

Two things that quietly ruin most generated dot-to-dots are dealt with here. Boundary tracing follows pixel edges, so a sharp corner arrives as a tiny staircase and naive simplification keeps several of its steps as separate dots — you get four numbers in a space smaller than the numbers themselves. Those near-duplicates are merged, then the remaining gaps are split until the dots are evenly spaced. And each number is placed along the outward normal of the curve rather than at a fixed up-and-right offset, so labels spread apart exactly where the dots are densest, and no number sits on the line the child is about to draw.

Then colour it in

A finished dot-to-dot is a colouring page: a closed black outline on white, which is exactly what a crayon wants. That makes this a good two-stage activity for a quiet afternoon — count and join first, colour second. Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and traced entirely in your browser using a canvas; nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.

What kind of photo works?

A strong silhouette. A dark subject against a light background traces cleanly; a busy scene with similar tones throughout does not, because there is no single outline to follow.

It says it cannot find a shape — what now?

Move the shape-detection slider, or use a picture with more contrast. Cropping tightly to the subject before uploading helps a great deal.

How many dots should I use?

For children still learning numbers, 15–25 keeps it achievable. Older children enjoy 60 or more, where the picture only becomes obvious near the end.

Can I colour it afterwards?

That is the idea — joining the dots produces an outline, and the sheet is plain black on white so it takes crayons and pencils well.

Why does it only trace the outside?

It follows the outer boundary of the largest dark shape, which is what a connect-the-dots puzzle needs. Interior detail would produce a tangle of unnumbered lines.

Can I see what it will look like finished?

Yes. Tick “Show the finished picture” and the joined outline is drawn over the dots. Print that copy if you want an answer key, or use it to check the shape is recognisable before printing a class set.

Why are some subjects missing parts?

The tool follows one continuous boundary. A subject made of separate pieces — a face with distinct eyes, a tree with a separate canopy — only gets its largest piece traced. Choose a shape that reads as a single silhouette.

Print the page and choose "Save as PDF" as your printer for a clean single-page file. You can also download it as a PNG, or as an SVG that scales to any size without going soft.
